What Does a DSP Actually Do in a Motorcycle System?
A DSP (Digital Signal Processor) sits between the head unit and the amplifier and gives you precise control over the audio signal before it reaches the speakers. It works entirely at line level: it shapes the signal and hands a processed feed to each amplifier channel, but it does not produce speaker power itself. Without a standalone or integrated DSP, the system is largely limited to the processing provided by the head unit and amplifiers. Factory Harley radios may also apply EQ, filtering or level changes designed around the original speakers rather than the aftermarket system being installed.
With a DSP you can control:
- Crossover frequencies: divide the signal so the right frequencies go to the right speakers, protecting tweeters from low frequencies and maximising efficiency across the system
- Time alignment: adjust the signal timing so sound from speakers at different distances reaches your ears simultaneously, improving imaging and clarity
- Parametric EQ: cut or boost specific frequencies across each channel to correct for the acoustic challenges of an open fairing, a helmet, and wind noise
- Output level matching: balance the signal across all channels before it hits the amplifier
The result is a tuned system, not just a loud one. DSP is why two systems with the same speakers and the same amplifier can sound dramatically different depending on whether they have been properly tuned.
HKI Mini DSP: The Entry Point for Harley Builds
The HKI Mini DSP ($650) is a 4-input, 8-output processor running 32-bit / 96 kHz processing with Linkwitz-Riley, Butterworth and Bessel crossovers up to 48 dB per octave. Its four inputs are low-level RCA, so a factory speaker-level signal needs a line-output converter or audio interface ahead of it. Tuning is handled through a smartphone app, which makes it the most convenient of the three to adjust at the bike. The PCB is conformal-coated for moisture resistance.
For Harley builds the HKI fits two scenarios best. First, when you already own a standard amplifier (an FLX700.4 or FLX1000.4, for example) and want to add DSP without replacing it. Second, as an alternative to the FLX PRO integrated DSP amplifiers, for riders who prefer to keep processor and amplifier as separate units for easier replacement later. If you are buying both an amplifier and a processor from scratch, compare the combined cost against a DSP-equipped amplifier rather than assuming separate components come out cheaper.
Eight outputs support several layouts. A four-speaker passive system uses four outputs and leaves four for extra amplifier channels or a subwoofer feed; a fully active four-position two-way system uses all eight, because every woofer and tweeter gets its own processed channel; a front active pair with passive rears uses six and leaves two. Because a DSP output is a processed line-level signal, a subwoofer output feeds an amplifier that you then run in stereo, mono or bridged mode as that amp supports. The three onboard presets let you save separate tunes for, say, highway and suburban riding.
Smartphone tuning is convenient at the bike; a larger desktop display can make complex routing, EQ and time-alignment work easier to view and manage on the other two units. Neither is inherently more precise.
Cicada DSP412PRO: The Motorcycle-Focused Processor
The Cicada DSP412PRO ($770) is the only one of these three with a certified IP65 weather rating: fully dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. It runs up to 12 outputs, selectable at 4, 8 or 12, from two or four inputs, and takes both low-level and compatible speaker-level signals through its roughly 0.2 to 12 V input range and optional harnesses for Harley-Davidson factory connectors, RCA or Cicada Molex.
For most four-speaker builds, eight outputs is plenty. Twelve opens up systems an eight-output processor cannot: fully active component sets (separate woofer and tweeter channels per position), a dedicated subwoofer channel, and multiple speaker zones processed independently at once. The HKI Mini DSP and Hertz S8 can each feed up to eight independently processed amplifier channels; the DSP412PRO becomes the clear choice when the system needs more than eight outputs.
Tuning uses Cicada's DIALD software, which currently requires a Windows 11 PC. Mobile-device support has been discussed, but there is no supported iOS or Android app at present, so it should not be assumed. DIALD provides parametric EQ, time alignment, and selectable high-pass, band-pass and low-pass crossovers with 6, 12, 24 or 48 dB per octave slopes across the DSP outputs.
Built for a Harley fairing
One of the DSP412PRO's biggest advantages is physical. Its UMC Ultra Micro Chassis measures roughly 67 × 98 × 28 mm, considerably smaller than either the Hertz S8 or the HKI Mini DSP. That matters on a motorcycle, where the processor often shares tight fairing space with amplifiers, mounting racks, power distribution, interfaces and factory wiring. The connections are staggered around the chassis to reduce connector crowding and make wire routing easier underneath the fairing. Optional input and output harnesses are available for Harley-Davidson factory connectors, conventional RCA connections and Cicada Audio Input Molex connections. Those Harley harnesses are optional and do not mean universal compatibility with every Harley audio architecture: a 2024-plus Skyline OS bike still needs the correct A2B digital interface first.
Hertz S8 DSP: Advanced Factory-Radio Integration
The Hertz S8 DSP ($1,310) is the strongest of these three for demanding factory-radio integration. It provides six inputs (high or low level, with the high-level side accepting up to around 21 V), a built-in USS (Universal Speaker Simulator) for factory radios that use speaker-load detection, a coaxial SPDIF digital input, and eight 4 V outputs, all at 24-bit / 96 kHz. It is a compact unit at about 130 × 88 × 34 mm.
High-level input is not exclusive to the S8: the DSP412PRO also accepts compatible speaker-level signals through the right harness. The S8's genuine edges are its six input channels, its higher speaker-level input range, USS load simulation, a digital input, and four presets. It can be paired with Hertz, Cicada or any other compatible amplifier: a properly configured DSP is brand-agnostic, so there is no technical requirement to keep the DSP and amplifiers on the same brand.
The S8 is tunable across Windows, macOS, iOS and Android over Bluetooth, the broadest software support of the three. Hertz describes the construction as weatherproof and uses an anti-corrosion-treated PCB, but publishes no IP number, so it should still be mounted in a protected position away from direct spray. At $1,310 it is the most expensive of the three; it earns that when factory-radio integration, six inputs, a digital source or the wider software support are what the build needs, rather than more than eight processed outputs.
Which One Is Right for Your Build?
- HKI Mini DSP: you already have a clean low-level RCA signal (or a converter for it), need no more than eight outputs, want convenient smartphone tuning, and ideally already own a compatible amplifier.
- Cicada DSP412PRO: you want the smallest footprint and a processor designed for fairing installation, need compatible high- or low-level integration, want up to twelve processed outputs and IP65 construction, and are comfortable tuning on a Windows 11 PC.
- Hertz S8 DSP: you need six inputs, higher-voltage speaker-level connection from the factory radio, USS load simulation or a digital input, and want tuning across Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, more than you need more than eight outputs.
- Exposed or semi-exposed mount: DSP412PRO, the only one with a published IP65 rating. IP65 covers dust and water ingress, not salt-fog corrosion, so it is not a guarantee against coastal corrosion on its own.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a DSP processor if I am already running a Cicada FLX PRO amplifier?
The FLX700.4PRO and FLX1400.4PRO have a built-in DSP with four amplified channels plus two processed pass-through outputs, so if you are running one you already have EQ and crossover control. A standalone DSP makes sense when the system needs more than those four amplified channels and two pass-through outputs, wants more input flexibility or system routing, or specifically benefits from the DSP412PRO's IP65 construction and up-to-twelve-output architecture.
What is the difference between 8 output channels and 12 output channels?
Eight outputs can support several layouts. A four-speaker passive system uses four outputs and leaves four for more amplifier channels or a subwoofer feed. A fully active four-position two-way system uses all eight, because every woofer and tweeter needs its own processed channel. A front active pair with passive rears uses six and leaves two. A DSP output is a line-level signal, so any bridging for extra power happens at the amplifier, not at the processor. What does IP65 mean for a DSP processor?
IP65 indicates protection against dust ingress and laboratory-tested low-pressure water jets when the unit is installed as specified. It should not be treated as permission to pressure-wash the processor, connectors or wiring, and a protected mounting position remains good practice. The Cicada DSP412PRO is the only processor of the three with a published IP65 rating. The HKI Mini DSP has a conformal-coated PCB and the Hertz S8 has an anti-corrosion-treated PCB, but neither publishes an IP number.
Can I use any of these DSPs with a factory Harley head unit?
The right connection depends on the bike and factory radio. The HKI Mini DSP accepts low-level RCA signals and normally needs a line-output converter or audio interface when fed from speaker-level factory outputs. The DSP412PRO takes compatible low- or high-level signals through its roughly 0.2 to 12 V input range and the appropriate optional harness. The Hertz S8 supports a wider speaker-level input range and includes USS load simulation for factory radios that watch for a speaker load. On Skyline OS and other A2B-equipped 2024-plus Harleys, the correct digital A2B interface is required before any of these analogue DSPs can connect to the factory audio path.
Which DSP is easiest to tune yourself on the bike?
The HKI Mini DSP is the simplest for phone-based tuning at the bike. The Hertz S8 can be configured over Windows, macOS, iOS or Android. The DSP412PRO currently requires a Windows 11 computer running DIALD. All three are typically set once at installation and left, rather than adjusted on the road.

These three DSPs are built around different priorities. The HKI Mini DSP is the most convenient for phone-based tuning when a clean low-level signal is already available.
