Cicada CXXM vs CM-X: Which Mid-Bass Speaker Suits Your Harley?

Quick answer: Both are dedicated Cicada mid-bass drivers (no tweeter, no crossover) in 2Ω and 4Ω. On Cicada's published figures, the Carbon Matrix CM-X is more sensitive, handles more power and has a higher published upper limit, and it is the only one offered in a 6x9. The Kevlar CXXM handles less power, sits slightly lower in sensitivity, and has a lower published bottom end and a much earlier upper roll-off. How those numbers translate into "warmer" or "brighter" is a tuning outcome, not a guarantee from the spec sheet, so treat the character notes below as MAA's listening and tuning observations.

This guide compares the two lines on Cicada's published specifications, then separates what those specs establish from how the drivers tend to behave once tuned, so you can choose for your Harley build.

What the Two Lines Share

Both the CM-X and CXXM are dedicated mid-bass drivers: they cover the low and midrange but include no tweeter and ship without a crossover. To build a full-range front stage with either, you pair them with a separate tweeter and set the crossover, ideally actively with a DSP. Both use Cicada's Rain or Shine all-weather construction for external motorcycle positions, both are sold as pairs, and both come in 2Ω and 4Ω. The choice between 2Ω and 4Ω is not simply "more output vs a standard channel": it changes the amplifier's current demand, its available output, the heat generated, the wiring and your options for future expansion, so match it to your amplifier's stable load and electrical plan as much as to the driver.

On the 8-inch, the CM8.X has a published response that extends unusually high for a mid-bass driver, to 20 kHz, which may provide useful upper-midrange extension. It remains a dedicated mid-bass component, though, with no tweeter, and in a proper component front stage a dedicated tweeter still gives better high-frequency placement and dispersion, so it is normally paired with a tweeter. The CXXM8's published response reaches down to 50 Hz and rolls off early at 3 kHz, suiting a deep mid-bass role. In the 6x9 size only the CM-X line has an option, the CM69.2X and CM69.4X (250W RMS, 94 dB, 70 Hz to 10 kHz, saddlebag-lid fitment). The CXXM line is 6.5-inch and 8-inch only for now.

Published Specs vs Listening Observations

It is worth being clear about what the spec sheet does and does not tell you. The frequency-response endpoints, sensitivity, power handling and dimensions above are published Cicada figures. What they do not directly prove is tonal character. A driver reaching 60 Hz rather than 70 Hz, or rolling off at 5 kHz rather than 10 kHz, does not by itself establish that it sounds deeper, warmer, fuller or smoother, and a higher sensitivity and higher upper limit do not by themselves prove a driver is brighter or has more "sparkle." Those are listening and tuning outcomes that depend on the enclosure, the crossover, the tweeter and the setup. In MAA's experience, tuned well, the CXXM tends to give a warmer, more mid-bass-focused result and the CM-X a more extended, higher-output one, but treat that as our observation, not a guarantee read off the table.

Cone, Motor and Build

The two lines are built to different priorities. The CM-X uses a Carbon Matrix Composite cone in a die-cast aluminium basket with Vortex Flow Venting, driven by an N35SH neodymium motor and a 2.0-inch Black Coat OFC voice coil. It also carries an OFC copper shorting ring in the motor gap, which reduces distortion and extends the usable high-frequency response, part of why the CM-X's published response reaches higher. The CXXM uses a Kevlar cone with an N45H neodymium motor, OFC voice coils and a Polycarbonate frame. Both lines use Cicada's Rain or Shine all-weather construction, so all-weather durability is not a deciding factor between them.

Frequency Response and Sensitivity

On sensitivity, both are measured the same way (1W/1m), so the figures are directly comparable: the CM-X sits at 94 dB, the CXXM at 92 dB (6.5-inch) and 93 dB (8-inch). A 2 dB difference is meaningful, not marginal: under equivalent conditions it can represent a substantial difference in the power needed to reach a given level, so the CM-X reaches that level on noticeably less power.

On frequency response, the published limits run in two directions. At the bottom, the CXXM's published response reaches lower (60 Hz at 6.5-inch, 50 Hz at 8-inch, against 70 Hz for the CM-X). At the top, the CXXM rolls off earlier (5 kHz at 6.5-inch, 3 kHz at 8-inch) where the CM-X's published response carries higher.

One caution on how to use that: an earlier natural roll-off does not remove the need for crossover control. Paired with a tweeter, a mid-bass still needs proper low-pass or band-pass filtering, because driver behaviour outside its intended band, cone breakup modes and acoustic interaction with the tweeter all still have to be managed. The earlier roll-off can make the CXXM's handover to a tweeter easier to tune, but it does not do the crossover's job for you. Fitment

At 6.5-inch the CXXM has the smaller cutout, 138mm (5.43") against the CM-X's 144mm (5.67"), with near-identical depth. The CXXM65 is pitched as a fit into standard 6.5-inch saddlebag-lid, Tour-Pak and lower-fairing mounts across 1998 to 2025, while the CM65.X is built around the 2014-and-later factory fairing position. Both are 6.5-inch class, so confirm your exact position and cutout before choosing. At 8-inch neither has a factory position, so both need a mounting kit or a custom-cut opening; footprints are close (177mm for the CXXM8, 180mm for the CM8) at similar depth. On 2014-2023 saddlebag lids the CXXM8 can use the Cicada 14CHDLID8 lid kit. For a 6x9 saddlebag-lid mid-bass, the CM-X line's CM69.2X or CM69.4X is currently the option.

Which Should You Choose?

These are MAA recommendations based on the published specs and our tuning experience, not absolutes:

  • Consider CM-X (Carbon Matrix) if you want the more sensitive, higher-power driver, want more upper-midrange reach from the mid itself, or need a 6x9 mid-bass. It rewards a proper active or high-output amplifier.
  • Consider CXXM (Kevlar) if you want lower published bottom-end extension and, tuned well, a warmer mid-bass focus. Its earlier published upper roll-off may suit a lower crossover region, though the actual handover to a tweeter still depends on measured response, dispersion, tweeter capability and crossover slopes. It also offers the easier 6.5-inch fitment and is the better-value line of the two.

Amplifier Pairing

Both lines want a proper amplifier channel, not factory power, and both are happiest with active tuning. The key point on protection: match the amplifier's actual output to the driver rather than relying on gain as a limiter. Gain is not a dependable power limiter, and a larger amplifier can exceed a driver's thermal or mechanical limits even with clean power. Safe operation depends on the output voltage the amp delivers, the crossover frequency and slope, any limiting, the programme content, the enclosure, and the driver's thermal and mechanical limits.

The CXXM is the line to be careful with, because it handles less power. The 6.5-inch CXXM65 is rated at 100W RMS: run each speaker on its own channel rather than bridging, because a bridged FLX500.4 or FLX700.4 can deliver well over 100W into it. If you do use a larger amp, set a limiter or target output voltage so output stays near the rating (for 100W that is roughly 20V into 4Ω or 14V into 2Ω) rather than trusting the gain knob. The 8-inch CXXM8 at 200W RMS is more forgiving: the 4Ω CXXM8.4 can be paired with a bridged FLX500.4 provided the amplifier is limited to roughly 28.3V RMS or 200W. Do not bridge the 2Ω CXXM8.2, because the FLX500.4's published bridged rating is for a 4Ω load.

The CM-X has more headroom at 250W RMS. In an active DSP build the FLX700.4PRO or FLX1400.4PRO give DSP crossover control and dedicated channels for the mid and tweeter from one unit, while the FLX1400.4 or FLX2000.4 suit a high-output 2Ω stereo build, again set with appropriate limiting rather than gain alone. What amplifier should I run them on?

The 6.5-inch CXXM65 handles 100W RMS, so run it on individual channels; if you use a larger amp, set a limiter or target voltage (roughly 20V into 4Ω or 14V into 2Ω for 100W) rather than trusting the gain. The 4Ω CXXM8.4 can take a bridged FLX500.4 if limited to about 28.3V RMS or 200W; do not bridge the 2Ω CXXM8.2. The CM-X at 250W RMS suits an active DSP amp (FLX700.4PRO or FLX1400.4PRO) or an FLX1400.4/FLX2000.4 for a 2Ω stereo build. Note that both the FLX1400.4 (350W at 2Ω) and FLX2000.4 exceed the CM-X's 250W rating at 2Ω, so they require a suitable DSP limiter or a verified target-output voltage.
