Everyone talks about how "loud" their Harley audio is. Most shops will tell you whatever you want to hear. We would rather show you the numbers.
So instead of guessing, we measure. This is our dB Reference Series: real bikes, real gear, measured under controlled, repeatable conditions so you can compare one build against another and see what each upgrade stage actually adds. This first entry looks at a 2021 Harley-Davidson Street Glide, and what happens when you go from a front-speaker upgrade running off head-unit power to a full front, rear and amplifier setup.
How We Measure
The whole point is repeatability: lock down the room, the microphone and the bike so any change in the result comes from the audio, not the test. Here is the standard method every bike in the series is measured with.
- Microphone: a calibrated miniDSP UMIK-1 with its own calibration file loaded, on a fixed tripod, on the bike's centreline, at the head height of a 182 cm rider, pointing forward (on-axis). The reading represents what the rider receives at the seat, not a generic one-metre speaker measurement.
- Meter and settings: AudioTools on the microphone, C-weighted on FAST response. We log two figures: a 5-second Leq as the primary, repeatable number, and a max-hold peak for the loudest level the system reaches.
- Signal: gains are set first with a 1 kHz test tone at -10 dB for clean, repeatable gain structure. Output is measured at the system's clean-maximum volume, and pink noise with an RTA is used to check frequency balance, not just the loudest dB.
- Bike and room: engine off (any idling test is recorded separately), in the same controlled workshop (about 9 m by 6 m, gyprock walls, metal ceiling), with the bike and tripod on marked, repeatable positions.
- Runs: three runs per configuration, and inconsistent readings get investigated rather than picking the highest.
This is an indoor reference measurement. Room reflections can lift the reading a little, so the numbers are for comparing builds measured the same way in the same room, not as an outdoor absolute. They are also short-duration, maximum-output figures, not a recommended listening level: wear hearing protection for sustained high-volume riding.
Configuration 1: Head Unit and Front Speakers
Setup
- Head unit: SoundStream HDHU.V2
- Front speakers: Wild Boar WBC 1654
- Rear speakers: None
- Amplifier: None, head-unit power only
This is a very common first step: decent front speakers and an upgraded head unit, running straight off the radio with no external amplifier.
Result
Peak at the rider's head: 99 to 100 dB
That is a solid improvement over stock and it sounds good around town. But it is still limited by head-unit power, the absence of rear fill, and less total cone area than a front and rear system. At highway speed with wind noise and a loud exhaust, this kind of setup starts fighting to be heard.
Configuration 2: Adding Rear Speakers and a Dedicated Amplifier

- Head unit: SoundStream HDHU.V2 (unchanged)
- Front speakers: Wild Boar WBC 1654 (unchanged)
- Rear speakers: Precision Power MAS.694 6x9 in the saddlebags
- Amplifier: Precision Power MAA4.400
- Gain: set with a 1 kHz test tone at -10 dB
Result
Peak at the rider's head: 112 dB
That is an increase of 12 to 13 dB over Configuration 1. A 10 dB increase is commonly perceived as roughly twice as loud, so this upgrade does not just make it a bit louder: to the rider it genuinely feels close to twice as loud.

These are max-hold peak figures at the rider's head. From our v1.1 method onward, every bike is measured C-weighted on FAST response with a 5-second Leq logged alongside the peak, so results across the series compare directly.
Why the Gap Is So Large
Rear 6x9s add significant cone area
The MAS.694 6x9s move considerably more air than the front pair alone. More cone area means more output and better mid-bass reaching the rider's head position.
The amplifier lets the speakers actually perform
Head units are not power plants. The MAA4.400 delivers clean, stable current so the speakers can do what they were built to do, instead of clipping and compressing under the limits of head-unit output.
Clean gain structure matters
Setting gain with a 1 kHz test tone at -10 dB means the system plays loud and clean, not loud and distorted. That 12 dB jump is usable headroom, not just noise.
Sound arrives from front and rear
With energy coming from both directions, the rider hears a stronger, fuller sound stage. Rear speakers contribute mid and high frequencies that cut through helmet and wind noise in a way that fronts alone cannot fully achieve.
What the Numbers Tell You About Upgrade Sequencing
The single biggest jump in measured output came not from swapping the front speakers, but from adding rear speakers and a proper amplifier to an already-good front configuration. The front speakers did not change at all between Config 1 and Config 2, and yet the system went from 99 to 100 dB up to 112 dB.
That is the practical lesson: a good head unit and front speakers are the right starting point, but rear speakers and an amplifier are where the real-world loudness lives. If you are still running head-unit power with no rear fill, that is where your upgrade effort will have the most measurable impact.
- Replace the front speakers with motorcycle-rated drivers.
- Add rear speakers to saddlebag lids or pods for extra cone area and rear fill.
- Add a quality amplifier to power everything properly.
- Add DSP if you want time alignment, precise EQ, and consistent tuning at every speed.
