What Size Speakers Does My Harley Have? Factory Speaker Sizes by Year and Model

Why This Matters Before You Buy Anything

Ordering the wrong speaker size is the most common Harley audio upgrade mistake. The answers aren't always obvious — the factory fitted 5.25-inch speakers in a lot of positions where a 6.5-inch speaker fits directly, and the saddlebag positions work on similar logic with 5x7 and 6x9 sizes. This guide covers what Harley actually shipped from the factory, what those sizes mean for upgrades, and what to watch for in each position and model era.

Quick Reference: Factory Speaker Sizes by Era

Understanding "5.25" in a 6.5" Basket" — What It Actually Means

On 2014-and-later Harley-Davidson Touring models, the factory front fairing speakers are 5.25-inch units — but they sit in a 6.5-inch basket or mounting location. The physical opening in the fairing pod is sized for a 6.5-inch speaker. Harley chose to fit a 5.25-inch driver into that space from the factory. That's why a 6.5-inch aftermarket speaker drops straight in — no modification to the fairing, no adaptor ring, no cutting.

The same principle applies to Tour-Pak pods on 2014-and-later Ultra and Limited models: 5.25-inch factory speaker in a 6.5-inch mount, direct 6.5-inch upgrade.

One important caveat: speaker depth matters. Some premium aftermarket speakers are physically deeper than standard units. A very deep 6.5-inch speaker in a fairing pod can contact the outer fairing shell. Shallower aftermarket designs fit without issue; deeper designs may require modification to the speaker pod. If you're running a high-end component system, confirm the mounting depth with MAA before ordering.

The same depth awareness applies to 2024-and-later models — the Skyline-era fairing still takes direct 6.5-inch upgrades, but depth remains relevant.

1998–2013: Genuine 5.25-Inch Cutouts

All Harley-Davidson Touring models from 1998 through 2013 — Street Glide, Electra Glide, Ultra Classic, Ultra Limited, Road Glide, Road Glide Ultra, and Tri Glide — shipped with genuine 5.25-inch front fairing speakers. The Tour-Pak pods on Ultra and Classic models also used 5.25-inch rear speakers. The Harley part number for the 1998–2005 family is 77181-01, and the 2006–2013 refresh used 77029-06.

Unlike the 2014-and-later platform, these bikes have a genuine 5.25-inch cutout. A 6.5-inch speaker will not drop in without an adaptor.

The upgrade path for 1998–2013 models uses a Harley-specific speaker ring adaptor, which steps the fairing opening up to accept a 6.5-inch speaker. This is a clean, widely-used approach — but you must confirm the speaker's mounting depth before ordering. The gap between the speaker grille and the outer fairing is tighter on 1998–2013 bikes than on the 2014-and-later platform. A speaker that is too deep for this space will contact the outer fairing shell and cannot be fitted. Shallower designs — including most 6.5-inch speakers purpose-built for Harley applications — fit correctly with the adaptor ring.

2014–2023 Standard Models: 5.25" in a 6.5" Basket

The Project Rushmore redesign in 2014 changed the fairing architecture. All standard 2014–2023 Touring models — Street Glide, Road Glide, Electra Glide, Ultra Classic, Ultra Limited, Road Glide Limited, Tri Glide Ultra — left the factory with 5.25-inch front speakers sitting in a 6.5-inch mounting location. A 6.5-inch aftermarket speaker fits directly with no adaptor, no fairing modification, and no cutting required.

Tour-Pak pods on 2014–2023 Ultra Limited and Road Glide Limited models follow the same pattern: 5.25-inch factory, 6.5-inch direct-fit upgrade.

The depth caveat still applies. Most quality aftermarket 6.5-inch speakers designed for Harley fairing positions fit without issue. Some higher-end or physically deeper designs may require modification to the speaker pod. Confirm depth with MAA if you are running premium component speakers.

2014–2023 CVO Models: Premium Factory Speaker Systems

CVO-level touring models came with significantly more capable factory audio systems than the standard range. The speaker configurations varied across CVO variants and years:

2014–2021 CVO Limited, CVO Tri Glide Ultra, and Ultra Limited

These models shipped with a Boom Audio Stage I 6.5-inch coaxial speaker (p/n 76000877) in the front fairing positions. This is a factory-fitted 6.5-inch unit — already at full upgrade diameter from the factory.

2015–2020 CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide

The CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide in this period ran a two-way factory front stage: a 6.5-inch mid-range woofer (76000822) plus a separate tweeter (76000869) in the fairing position. In the rear, these models used a 5x7-inch bi-amplifiable speaker (76000820) capable of running separate channels for the mid-bass and tweeter portions of a two-way system. This is a more complex architecture than the standard touring platform and is relevant when planning upgrades — the rear speaker is not a simple single-driver unit.

2022–2023 CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide

For 2022–2023, the CVO Street Glide and Road Glide moved to Boom Audio by Rockford Fosgate as the factory audio partner. The front stage uses the Stage II Boom Audio by Rockford speaker (76000999) in the fairing positions. The rear used a 5x7-inch Boom Audio by Rockford unit (76001001) in the saddlebag locations.

2024 and Later: Skyline OS Models

The 2024 redesign of the standard FLHX and FLTRX introduced Skyline OS and a new infotainment architecture with a separate four-channel amplifier. The front speaker position on standard 2024-and-later Street Glide and Road Glide models is still a 5.25-inch factory speaker in a 6.5-inch mount — same direct-fit upgrade path as 2014–2023, depth caveat still applies.

The saddlebag position also changed on 2024-and-later standard models: the factory speaker is a 5x7-inch unit, but it sits in a 6x9-inch basket. A 6x9-inch aftermarket speaker drops in directly — the same logic as the 5.25-in-a-6.5-basket at the front.

The 2024+ platform uses a digital A2B audio network between the infotainment control unit and the stock amplifier. This changes how external amplifiers and DSP processors are integrated — a NAV-TV ZEN-H A2B interface is required before any aftermarket amp or DSP can be connected. Speaker upgrades at the front and rear positions are unaffected by this, but amplifier upgrades require the interface first.

2025–2026 Current Models by Variant

The current Harley-Davidson Touring range (2025–2026) has a clear split between standard and premium models:

Model Fairing Front Speakers Tour-Pak Rear
Street Glide / Road Glide Batwing / Sharknose 5.25" (in 6.5" basket)
Street Glide Ultra Batwing 5.25" (in 6.5" basket)
Street Glide Limited / Road Glide Limited Batwing / Sharknose 6.5" 6.5"
CVO Street Glide / CVO Road Glide Batwing / Sharknose 6.5" 5x7" saddlebag
CVO Street Glide ST / CVO Road Glide ST Batwing / Sharknose 6.5"
CVO Road Glide RR Sharknose 6.5"
CVO Street Glide Limited Batwing 6.5" 6.5" 6.5" lower fairing
Tri Glide Ultra Batwing 5.25" (in 6.5" basket) 5.25" (in 6.5" basket)
Road Glide 3 / Street Glide 3 Sharknose / Batwing 5.25" (in 6.5" basket)
Street Glide 3 Limited / CVO SG3 Limited Batwing 6.5" 6.5" 6.5" lower fairing (CVO)

Road Glide and Batwing Fairings: What's Actually Different

The front speaker opening in a Road Glide inner fairing and a Street Glide or Electra Glide batwing fairing are the same diameter. The speaker size rules are identical across both platforms for any given year.

The difference between Road Glide and batwing fairing speaker fitment is the grille. Road Glide models use a sharknose-specific inner fairing grille that is physically different from the batwing variants — the shape and mounting of the grille matches the Road Glide's inner fairing architecture. Batwing models use their own grille design. These are not interchangeable.

Some aftermarket grille options for both platforms also include cutouts or mounts for separate tweeters, allowing a two-way component setup in the fairing position. Tweeter-equipped grilles are available for both sharknose and batwing fairings. The grille choice is worth considering before finalising a speaker upgrade, as a component speaker system may call for a different grille than a coaxial setup.

Saddlebag and Tour-Pak Positions

Saddlebag — 2014–2023 Models

On many 2014–2023 Touring models, the factory saddlebag speakers are 5x7-inch units, but they are not simple full-range speakers. They are bi-ampable, with separate signal paths for the mid-bass and tweeter sections.

That matters when upgrading. A conventional 6x9-inch speaker is normally a single-input design, so it cannot simply be plugged into a factory bi-amped saddlebag speaker circuit without addressing the wiring or amplifier output configuration. The upgrade is not just a lid-fitment issue — it is also an audio-signal issue.

Direct 5x7 replacements that retain the factory-style bi-ampable design are rare, although Cicada Audio offers a compatible option. Moving to 6x9-inch speakers usually requires replacement or modified saddlebag lids, plus the correct wiring changes so the new speakers receive the right signal.

This also applies to CVO models with bi-ampable 6.5-inch speakers, where the factory speaker wiring may separate mid and high frequencies rather than feeding a standard full-range speaker input.

Saddlebag — 2024 and Later Standard Models

The 2024-and-later standard Street Glide and Road Glide saddlebag position uses the same logic as the front fairing: a 5x7-inch factory speaker sitting in a 6x9-inch basket. A 6x9-inch aftermarket speaker drops in directly with no modification to the lids.

Tour-Pak — 2014 and Later

Tour-Pak speaker pods on 2014-and-later Ultra Limited, Road Glide Limited, and equivalent models follow the same 5.25-in-a-6.5-basket pattern as the front fairing. A 6.5-inch aftermarket speaker is a direct-fit upgrade with the same depth considerations as the front position.

The Bottom Line

  • 1998–2013 (any model): Genuine 5.25-inch cutout. 6.5-inch upgrade uses a Harley-specific adaptor ring — confirm speaker depth before ordering.
  • 2014–2023 standard (all models): 5.25-inch factory speaker in a 6.5-inch basket. Direct 6.5-inch upgrade, no adaptor needed. Check speaker depth for deeper premium designs.
  • 2014–2023 CVO models: Various 6.5-inch factory configurations — see the CVO section above before planning an upgrade.
  • 2024+ standard models: Same 5.25-in-6.5-basket up front; 5x7-in-6x9-basket in the saddlebags. A2B interface required before adding external amplifiers.
  • 2025–2026 Limited and CVO: 6.5-inch factory speakers in fairing and Tour-Pak positions. Upgrade stays at 6.5-inch.
  • Road Glide vs batwing: Same speaker sizes, different grilles. Confirm Road Glide-specific grille fitment when ordering.

If you're unsure which speakers fit your specific bike — particularly on CVO models or bikes with non-standard factory audio — contact MAA with your model and year before ordering.
