Privacy & Your Data

Privacy & your data

Plain English, not legal boilerplate.

What personal information Motorcycle Audio Australia collects, why we collect it, who we share it with, and what you can do about it. We handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles.

Questions about your information? Contact our Privacy Officer at support@motorcycleaudio.com.au or call 07 3350 1354. We don’t sell your personal information, and we never have.

Collection

What we collect, and why

We don’t hold more information than we need to run the business.

WhatInformation we collect

  • Contact and order details — your name, billing and delivery address, phone number and email.
  • Your bike — model and year, and sometimes what’s already fitted, so we can confirm fitment.
  • Payment information — handled by PCI-compliant providers such as Shopify Payments, Afterpay and Zip. We never see or store your full card number.
  • Account information — username, password, preferences and order history.
  • Device and usage information — IP address, browser, time zone, cookies, pages viewed and items added to cart.
  • Messages — emails, chat messages, reviews and anything else you send us.
  • Photographs of your motorcycle — where we’ve worked on your bike.
  • CCTV footage — if you visit our Kedron workshop.

WhyWhat we use it for

  • To process, pack and deliver your order
  • To confirm fitment and give you accurate advice about your bike
  • To handle warranty claims, returns and support enquiries
  • To verify payments and reduce fraud
  • To improve the site and the products we stock
  • To send you marketing, but only if you’ve opted in — and you can opt out any time
  • To meet our tax and legal obligations
You’re welcome to ask general questions about fitment or products without giving us your details. We’ll need them once you place an order.
Automation

Decisions made without a person

A small number of things happen automatically. These are all of them.

Fraud screeningFlagged orders

Shopify assigns a risk indicator to orders based on things like address mismatches and payment patterns. We use it as a prompt to look more closely — a person at MAA reviews any flagged order before we hold or cancel it.

If your order is cancelled and you think that’s wrong, call us and we’ll sort it out.

Buy now, pay laterAfterpay and Zip

If you choose Afterpay or Zip, they run their own automated assessment to approve or decline you. That decision is theirs, not ours, and it’s governed by their privacy policy. We pass them the order details needed to process the payment.

What we don’t doNo profiling, no AI decisions

We don’t use profiling or automated systems to set prices, and we don’t make decisions about you using artificial intelligence.

Images

Photos of your bike, and CCTV

Two places where we hold images, and the rules on each.

Build photosPhotos of your bike

We often photograph builds and installs — it’s how we show riders what’s possible, and it’s the most useful content we produce.

  • We ask your permission before we photograph your bike for publication, and again if we want to use it somewhere prominent.
  • We avoid capturing number plates, VINs and anything showing where you live. If one slips through, tell us and we’ll blur or remove it.
  • We don’t publish your name unless you’ve said we can.
You can change your mind. Ask us and we’ll take the images down from anything we control. Once something has been shared or reposted by others we can’t always claw it back, but we’ll do what we can.

WorkshopCCTV at Kedron

Our Kedron workshop is monitored by CCTV. It’s there to protect customer motorcycles, our stock and our staff.

  • Footage is recorded continuously and automatically overwritten after 30 days.
  • We only review footage if there’s a security or safety incident, or if we’re asked to by police.
  • We don’t use it for marketing and we don’t publish it.
Sharing

Who sees your information

Only where it’s needed to run the business.

WhoWho we share it with

  • Shopify — hosts our store and processes orders (Shopify Privacy Policy)
  • Couriers — StarTrack, TNT, FedEx, DHL and others, for delivery
  • Payment providers — Shopify Payments, Afterpay, Zip
  • Email marketing — Klaviyo, if you’ve subscribed
  • Analytics and advertising — Google Analytics, and Meta advertising tools
  • Suppliers and manufacturers — only where needed for a warranty claim, and only the details required to process it
  • Authorities — where the law requires it
We don’t sell your personal information, and we never have.

WhereWhere your information is stored

Our store runs on Shopify, whose servers are in Canada and the United States. Several of the services listed — Klaviyo, Google and Meta among them — also store data in the United States and other countries.

This means your information may be handled outside Australia. We only use providers that apply recognised safeguards for international data transfers, but overseas privacy laws are not identical to Australia’s.

Tracking

Cookies and advertising

What we set, and how to turn it off.

CookiesWhat they do and how to opt out

We use cookies to keep your cart working, remember preferences, and understand how the site is used. We also use advertising tools from Google and Meta, which may show you our products elsewhere after you’ve visited us.

You can clear or block cookies in your browser, and you can opt out of targeted advertising here:

Blocking cookies may stop parts of the site working properly — the cart in particular.
Retention & security

How long we keep it, and how we protect it

What we hold, for how long, and what happens if something goes wrong.

RetentionHow long we keep it

Order & warranty records7 yearsRequired by tax law
CCTV footage30 daysThen overwritten
  • Support correspondence — around 24 months, so we can pick up where we left off
  • Marketing data — until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it

SecurityKeeping it secure

We use encryption, access controls and monitoring, and we limit who inside MAA can see what.

No online system is completely secure, but we take it seriously and we don’t hold more information than we need.

BreachesIf something goes wrong

If there’s a data breach that’s likely to cause you serious harm, we’ll notify you and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, as the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme requires.

We’ll tell you what happened, what information was involved, and what we recommend you do.

We don’t sell your personal information, and we never have.
Your control

Your choices and your rights

Four things you can ask us for, and how quickly we respond.

Access & correctionSeeing what we hold

Access — you can ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you. Email our Privacy Officer and we’ll respond within 30 days. There’s no charge.

Correction — if something’s wrong, tell us and we’ll fix it.

Deletion & marketingGetting it removed

Deletion — you can ask us to delete your information. We’ll do it unless we’re legally required to keep it, such as order records we must retain for tax purposes. We’ll tell you which is which.

Marketing — every marketing email has an unsubscribe link, and it works immediately. You can also just reply and ask.

ChildrenUnder 18

Our products and services are aimed at adults. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has given us their information, contact us and we’ll delete it.

Outside AustraliaIf you’re overseas

We’re an Australian business and we sell mainly in Australia and New Zealand. We handle all personal information to Australian Privacy Principles standards regardless of where you are.

If you’re in a country with additional privacy rights and you’d like your information handled a particular way, contact us and we’ll do our best to accommodate it.
