Understanding the Classic Batwing Platform
The 1998-2013 Batwing Touring platform (the 2006-2013 Street Glide, 1998-2013 Electra Glide and Ultra models, and 2009-2013 Tri Glide) runs a fundamentally different audio architecture to the 2014 and newer generation. The Street Glide name applies from the 2006 model year, so earlier Batwing bikes are Electra Glide and Ultra models. Pre-Boom! The processor can then provide the required input correction, crossover control and system tuning before the signal reaches the amplifier.
A DSP cannot repair a source signal that is already clipping. The system must be configured around the factory radio's maximum clean volume.
Replacing the Head Unit
A model-specific aftermarket head unit removes the original radio from the signal path and provides a more practical foundation for an upgraded system, particularly when its RCA pre-outs are used to feed an external amplifier or DSP. On this platform, a head unit replacement can add wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth, and provides 4V or 5V RCA pre-outs (depending on the head unit) to drive an external amplifier. The Role of External Amplification
Available clean power is one of the biggest limitations in an older factory system. A speaker upgrade can improve clarity, but it cannot create additional amplifier headroom.
A modern head unit with a stronger, 2-ohm-stable internal amplifier can provide a worthwhile first-stage improvement when paired with efficient speakers. The amplifier should be selected around the speakers' impedance, sensitivity and RMS power requirements, not simply around the highest advertised wattage.

DSP Signal Correction and System Tuning
A DSP serves two different purposes on this platform. When the factory radio is retained, a suitably equipped processor can be configured around the signal behaviour identified during testing, including any EQ, filtering or volume-dependent processing that is actually present.
When a modern aftermarket head unit with RCA pre-outs is installed, the DSP is used primarily for system tuning: crossover control, equalisation, channel routing, level matching and, where useful, time alignment.
In either case, the source unit's maximum unclipped volume must be established during setup. A DSP can optimise a clean signal, but it cannot restore information once the source itself has clipped.

What Actually Works on 1998-2013 Batwing Touring Models
Effective upgrades on this platform follow a clear structure:
- A suitable source strategy: either a model-specific aftermarket head unit with RCA pre-outs, or properly measured factory-radio integration
- Enough clean power for the chosen speakers and desired output, using an external amplifier where the head unit alone is insufficient
