The gasket is the soft layer at the lid-to-bag interface, and a properly seated one absorbs the contact between lid and bag. That contact is where buzz and vibration start on a bag running a speaker in or near the lid. On the road: the lid sits against the bag rather than tapping on it, so the rattle at the lid interface goes quiet.
Seating the gasket also closes the lid tighter, which improves weather protection and the acoustic isolation of a lid-mounted speaker.
