The SoundStream WHD.UNLOC is the CAN bus integration kit for the WHD14+ head unit. It includes the iDataLink® Maestro® RR2 module, a plug-and-play wire harness, and the WHD14+ firmware activation. If your Harley has a factory Boom!™ Stage 1, Stage 2 or Harley HD Audio amplifier — which includes most CVO models — this kit is required, not optional: without it the factory amplifier cannot communicate with the WHD14+ and your amplified speakers will not play.
On a bike with no factory amplifier, the WHD14+ is a complete upgrade on its own and the WHD.UNLOC is an optional addition for riders who want on-screen engine data and full programmable handlebar control. On a factory amplified bike it is a required part of the install. The difference is worth getting right before you order — it is one of the most common reasons a Harley head unit installation ends up with silent speakers.
Who This Is For
Two riders need this kit. The first is anyone fitting a SoundStream WHD14+ to a Harley with factory amplified audio — most CVO® Touring models, most Ultra, Limited and Tri Glide® Ultra models, and most 2014 to 2023 Touring bikes fitted with factory saddlebag or Tour-Pak® speakers. For these riders the WHD.UNLOC is mandatory equipment. The second is the rider on a non-amplified bike who wants the WHD14+ to behave like a fully integrated factory system rather than a CarPlay screen — real-time engine gauges, warning pop-ups, and thumb controls that do more than volume and track skip. For that rider it is an optional upgrade, and a worthwhile one.
This kit is for the WHD14+ only. It is not compatible with any other SoundStream head unit.
What This Is Best For
- Keeping a factory Boom!™ amplifier alive — The Maestro® RR2 provides two-way CAN bus communication between the WHD14+ and the Harley's factory network. That link is what allows the OEM amplifier to receive audio and control data from a non-Harley head unit. Boom!™ Stage 1, Stage 2 and Harley HD Audio amplifiers are retained on compatible 2014–2023 Touring models, with CVO fitment limited to early 2023 and older. Without the kit, the amplifier has nothing to talk to and the speakers it drives stay silent — this is the reason the kit exists.
- Real engine data on screen — Up to 10 live digital gauges chosen from 40+ available parameters: oil pressure, engine temperature, gear position, battery voltage, fuel level and more, subject to what your specific bike publishes on its CAN bus. On a Touring bike with a minimal factory gauge cluster, this puts the data you actually want in front of you without adding hardware to the bars.
- Warnings you don't have to watch for — Oil pressure, fuel level and engine temperature trigger on-screen pop-ups over whatever you're running, so you don't need to leave a gauge screen up to catch a problem. On a long run in Australian heat, an engine temperature alert that interrupts your map is worth more than a gauge you glance at every twenty minutes.
- Thumb controls that do the whole job — Without the kit, the included thumb control module handles volume, track skip, and call answer and end. With it, the OEM handlebar controls become fully programmable, including press-and-hold functions for scrolling, selecting, and adjusting playback and settings. Full cursor navigation from the bars means you're not reaching for the screen at speed or in gloves.
- A clean install — The supplied harness is pre-wired and plugs directly into the WHD14+'s existing loom. No factory wiring is cut and nothing is spliced, so the bike can be returned to standard later without evidence.
Do I Need This Kit, or Is It Optional?
It comes down to one question: does your Harley have a factory Boom!™ amplifier?
Yes — factory Boom!™ Stage 1, Stage 2 or Harley HD Audio fitted. The WHD.UNLOC is required. Without it your factory amplifier cannot be retained and the speakers it drives will not operate with the WHD14+.
No — fairing speakers only, no factory amplifier. The WHD.UNLOC is optional. The WHD14+ works as a complete head unit and audio upgrade on its own; add this kit only if you want digital gauges, warning pop-ups and advanced thumb control mapping.
Not sure which you have? Three quick checks:
1. Does it have factory rear speakers? Most bikes with factory saddlebag lid or Tour-Pak® speakers have a factory amplifier as well. A bike with fairing speakers only usually does not.
2. Is it a CVO? Most CVO Touring models left the factory with Boom!™ Stage 1 or Stage 2 amplified audio as standard.
3. Is it an Ultra, Limited or Tri Glide® Ultra? Factory amplified audio is standard or a very common factory option across these models.

What's Inside the WHD.UNLOC Kit
The iDataLink® Maestro® RR2 is the CAN bus interface module — the component that does the actual work. It sits between the WHD14+ and the Harley's data network, translating between the two so that the head unit can read vehicle data and, critically, so the factory amplifier will accept a non-Harley source. It is the same module family used for OEM integration across the automotive aftermarket, configured here specifically for Harley-Davidson® Touring. On the road: this is why your factory Boom!™ amp still plays after the head unit is swapped — the RR2 keeps the conversation between the radio and the bike's network going.
The plug-and-play wire harness is pre-terminated for the WHD14+'s existing loom. Nothing is cut, nothing is spliced, and no factory connector is modified. On the road: a harness that plugs in rather than splices in means no crimp joints to vibrate loose over a few thousand kilometres of Australian road, and no wiring evidence if the bike is ever returned to standard.
The firmware activation is the software side of the kit — it enables the WHD14+ to recognise and communicate with the Maestro® RR2. MAA install it before shipping when the kit is ordered with the head unit. On the road: the unit arrives already talking to the module, so the installer's job is mechanical rather than diagnostic.
Why the Factory Amplifier Needs This Kit
On a 2014 to 2023 Harley Touring bike with Boom!™ audio, the amplifier is not a passive device on the end of a speaker wire. It sits on the bike's CAN bus and expects to be addressed by a Harley head unit — it receives audio, but also power state, source and level information over the network. Replace the head unit with an aftermarket unit that cannot speak that protocol and the amplifier receives nothing it recognises. It does not fail gracefully to a basic input; it simply stays out of circuit, and every speaker downstream of it goes quiet.
The Maestro® RR2 solves this by acting as a translator on the bus. It presents the WHD14+ to the bike in a form the factory amplifier accepts, and presents the bike's data to the WHD14+ in a form the head unit can display. This is why the fix is a module and a firmware activation rather than an adapter lead — the problem is protocol, not connector shape. It is also why there is no workaround: on an amplified bike, no amount of rewiring substitutes for the CAN bus link.
Digital Gauges — What You Can Actually Display
Up to 10 gauges can be shown at once, selected from more than 40 available parameters including oil pressure, engine temperature, gear position, battery voltage, fuel level, intake air temperature and throttle position. The exact list depends on what your specific model and year publishes on its CAN bus — an Ultra Limited and a Street Glide® of the same year do not necessarily expose the same data set, and older bikes in the range generally expose less than newer ones. On the road: battery voltage and oil pressure on screen turn the head unit into a diagnostic tool on a long ride, rather than something you only look at to change a playlist.
